Abdullah Al Othman’s Language and the City (2021) is a multimedia installation that is an evolution of the artist’s previous works documenting the linguistic and architectural evolution of Riyadh. This documentation sheds light on the city’s street signs and signboards dating back to the 20th century.
The lightwork provides viewers with a deeper understanding of the city’s transformation, taking them on an emotional and intellectual journey through time. Simultaneously, the viewer enjoys a creative experience that highlights the importance of language and architectural structures in shaping our landmarks and collective memory. The installation stands as a living testament to the evolution of language, the city and the historical interaction between the two.
