A native of Dubai and an archaeology-art history graduate of Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, Maryam Al Falasi established her gallery “Iris Projects” in late 2024 in the UAE capital, where she represents a roster of 10 emerging artists from the UAE and Saudi Arabia. “In Greek mythology, Iris was the goddess and inventor of colour,” Al Falasi told AD. “She was also a protector of merchants. As a female, I wanted a name that sort of reflected a female deity that supported or protected the arts.”

A surprising aspect of Al Falasi is her age. She is only 26 years old, one of the UAE’s youngest art patrons, and yet carries herself with grace and confidence, speaking in a calm and mature manner. “I think it’s my mother’s influence,” said Al Falasi. “First of all, she’s literally the strongest woman I know. She studied abroad when she was fifteen and was ahead of her time. It was a bit difficult to do so back then in the UAE. She pushed boundaries.” She also adds how her upbringing shaped her interest in cultural matters, leaving a lasting impact on her: “My family was interested in everything about life – travel, cultures, food, music, art, even literature. I’m very curious, and it all comes from the family.”
