Juma Al Haj: Mandarin Oriental

Mandarin Oriental, Dubai, October 2025

Rooted in the history of Wasl, the ancient name for Dubai, once a vital port along the maritime trade routes. This diptych retraces the flow of cultural exchange across seas. Wasl, meaning “connection,” stood as a meeting point where merchants, travelers, and ideas converged, shaping a legacy of openness and dialogue that continues to define Dubai today.

The two panels reflect the two shores, one evoking the Gulf’s coastline and its intimate ports, the other resonating with the distant lands that connected through maritime trade. Together, they echo the flow of encounter, the balance of departure and arrival, and the rhythm of cultural dialogue carried by the sea.
